------- Google Groups Information -------

You can accept this invitation by clicking the following URL:

http://groups.google.co.za/group/sawla/sub?s=vmxADAgAAACQ5.......

Ignoreer asseblief die res van hierdie epos oor 'Access to the group on the web...' ens. Meer daaroor op 'n ander dag

How do I join the SAWLA mailing list?

To improve communication between SAWLA management and members, a SAWLA Google group to function as electronic mailing list was started. How does one subscribe to it?

To limit spam, the SAWLA group is private and subscription by invitation only

Should you want to join, please contact the SAWLA management. If your request is successful, an email invitation will be issued to you from within the group

Google will paste a link (URL) at the bottom of the email to be clicked for accepting the invitation. It follows just after this text:

------- Google Groups Information -------

You can accept this invitation by clicking the following URL:

http://groups.google.co.za/group/sawla/sub?s=vmxADAgAAACQ5.......

Simply click on the link to accept. You will then be taken to a web page where your subscription will be confirmed

Subscribing is the only difficult part, from then on everything happens by normal email

Please ignore the rest of the email about  'Access to the group on the web...' etc. More about that on another day

SAWLA bedryf nou 'n Google epos groep (Eng. mailing list), hou dit enige voordele vir my in?

So werk dit

What is the use of the SAWLA mailing list?

SAWLA now maintains an electronic mailing list at Google groups, how can I use this to my advantage?

Part of the SAWLA mission to improve the quality of SA wine laboratories, is to create an effective forum for communication and a SAWLA electronic mailing list will contribute to this

It works like this

All member email addresses are maintained centrally and by sending an email to sawla@googlegroups.com, it is distributed to all members on the list. It'll ease SAWLA management messages, but also be very helpful to members looking to source advice on wine laboratory issues from amongst SAWLA members

There are always helpful members in healthy Internet communities who contribute to the betterment of the group - should somebody post a question you could answer, simply reply on the email. Remember your reply gets distributed to everybody on the list and will possibly lead to further discussion. You could also reply to the poster in private and off-list. All answers to the list are archived per topic on a web site and a valuable and searchable knowledge base is built up that members may eventually browse for answers without having to post to the list

More about the group web site later, it should not be confused with www.sawla.org - reliable and innovative Google groups was chosen for the SAWLA list. There is a reference to the web site at the bottom of this mail but ignore for now. If you want to find out more about mailing lists, please visit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_mailing_list. More about the etiquette of mailing lists, or netiquette, at http://www.dtcc.edu/cs/rfc1855.html#3

The list is private and membership on invitation only, the current subscriptions were harvested from the Interlab system. Please direct requests for membership for your new lab staff members or those not currently included, to the SAWLA management. It is however very easy to unsubscribe, just send an email to sawla-unsubscribe@googlegroups.com

Because Google groups will only redistribute emails received from current members, no or minimal junk mail will be generated by the list. Should valid traffic increase enough, and lets hope it becomes a lively forum, to clog your inbox, please configure your email program to sort SAWLA mail into its own folder. Instructions on request

Important

Because the SAWLA management is going to use the list for official notices, it is important that all SAWLA members join and stay subscribed to the list

How are the participant scores and rankings calculated?

The system publishes a ranking table per sample, listing top performing participants. The same scores are used to calculate the lab of the year. How are these scores arrived at?

System managers determine which analyses are to be included in the calculations and select them in the system set-up. These represent the most popular wine analyses, performed by many labs

After each round, labs are given points relative to their performance for these analyses, 2 points for an A result, 1 point for a B and 0 for a C or smaller

In the current set-up, January 2010, the following 7 analyses are included in the calculation:

       Alcohol

       FSO2 (Ripper)

       pH

       Reducing Sugar

       TSO2 (Ripper)

       Titratable Acid

       Volatile Acid

A score of 14 thus represents full marks

Presentation of scores

The top performing labs' scores are always shown in context in the right hand column on all pages in a 'top performers' box in the format position/rank, lab name, score

The top performers list is always displayed for the sample being viewed in the page centre - to see the score for a particular sample, navigate to the particular sample. If general pages are viewed, the scores for the last 2 samples completed are shown

Labs not in the top ranks' position and score are shown at the bottom of the list but is only visible to themselves

Lab of the Year

At the end of the year, all the scores for the year are totalled to calculate the best performing lab over that period
